Options Assistant for Win98

Options Assistant is a utility I'm developing that gives you safe and easy access to a number of documented and undocumented Windows 98 tweaks. You can use it to customize Start menu and desktop items, and change a number of system parameters.

It's freeware, and you're welcome to use and share it. (Posted version is current as of 8/99, but is expected to undergo extensive expansion throughout the fall of '99

Logon Security

After adding entry in this .REG file, the system will not allow a user to log on unless he enters a valid User ID and Password. (Warning! Download the companion .REG file that disables this function in case you are denied access to your system.)

Convenient Shortcuts

Here are some shortcuts you can put on your desktop to make some functions instantly available.

Exit Windows

This shortcut will immediately shut down your system, without having to wade through the Start Menu. Click here to download ExitWindows.lnk
(NOTE: you must rename the file from exitwindows-lnk to exitwindows.lnk for it to work properly.)

Start Menu Cleanup

Win98 has a facility to reorganize Startup menu, but it's a lot of mouse clicks away. (Right-click the taskbar, click Properties, click the "Start Menu Programs" tab, click the Advanced button.) Or, you can get there from a desktop icon I've created. Click here to download the StartMenu.lnk
(NOTE: you must rename the file from startmenu-lnk to startmenu.lnk for it to work properly.)

Registry Backup

This shortcut will immediately back up your system registry, a process that normally happens the first time your system boots each day. Using this, you can force an extra backup - a great idea before installing new software or hardware. Click here to download RegBackup.lnk
(NOTE: you must rename the file from regbackup-lnk to regbackup.lnk for it to work properly.)

Boot Log Analyzer

BootLog Analyzer checks your BOOTLOG.TXT file (found in C:\ root), times and reports about slow loading drivers. (.386, .DLL, .DRV, .VXD etc.) Just follow the guidelines in BLA.TXT to install it.
